Road to the Account and the Path Forward

Yesterday, I've finally opened registrations to the Hyprland Account infrastructure. As expected, within 20s a small bug has surfaced which made the backend repeatedly crash. Ah, life of a software engineer. That was fixed promptly and registrations started flowing in steadily. As of right now, about 12-ish hours after the launch, we have a bit over 500 registered users.

If you haven't signed up yet, consider doing so here :) It's free.

In today's post I wanted to talk a bit about the why, how, and what will happen in the future.

Why an account?#

The key point is to sell hyprperks - our subscription offering, where you get access to some goodies from us for a monthly fee. None of that is hyprland features themselves, it's just some premium forums and preconfigured dotfiles from us.

However, the account also enables us to introduce the Hyprland forums, available at forum.hypr.land, where users can ask questions and discuss things in a way that is possible to be found afterwards.

We've initially done support on the Discord server, but as the amount of questions (and duplicates...) grew, it became a mess. Discourse (the forum software) is way better for such a "problem -> solution" flow. Not only is the grouping and search better, it's also indexed by search engines, so you can find solutions without joining anything.

We will be phasing out Discord support in favor of the forums soon.

What's the timeline?#

We've opened the forums and registrations yesterday. Now, within the next week or two, we plan to launch hyprperks, potentially to just a few beta testers initially. I'd like to avoid the "crash after 20s" with stuff that has to do with, you know... money.

The software, for now, runs on my own dedicated server, but I plan to move it to a separate DS in the future for better performance, and some splitting of the infra. This should improve email deliverability and overall stability (right now for example if the backend crashes, wiki and the main page go down as well.)

When it comes to sponsors, we should be able to start taking those later this week, max next week. Feel free to email us already if you / your company is interested, see account.hypr.land/sponsors.

Some FAQ#

I've gotten a few questions repeatedly, so I'll answer them here at once:

Will my donation on Ko-Fi transfer to hyprperks?#

Nope, you'll need to subscribe to hyprperks separately.

Can I pay yearly?#

I haven't implemented that, but if there is demand, I can add a yearly option.

Will you take crypto?#

No

Will you hire people with the money?#

If this turns out profitable enough for me to have the money to hire someone else, I very likely will. More hyprland more better.

Who made the dotfiles?#

The dotfiles are made by me, outfoxxed and end_4. Most of the code is mine, but end and fox have been a massive help with a lot of stylistic and technical things. Once we release, the dotfiles will be solely maintained by me.

What if someone leaks the dotfiles?#

They'll get banned. In general, it's not a huge issue for us. The value of the dotfiles is not in the snapshot that one can take and leak, but in the continued, easy updates, trust, and support. A leak will not have the updates, or trust. How many "adobe cracks" online are just trojans? Exactly.

That, and it's simply support of the development, a token of appreciation from you, the user. You can treat it as a donation with benefits.

Closer#

Thanks to everyone for the enthusiasm and support. I hope we can get the forums and hyprperks to be as good as they can be. Working on Hyprland full-time would come with only benefits to you.
